Some information about how this project came about is presented below. It is written by our esteemed
classmate, Carl Okuyama. He is the one that came up with this great idea:
"Amy Okuyama, HHS Class of 1969,
retired from Hilo High School as Librarian for 39 years; she saved the
class of 1968 & 1969 Viking Newsletters as the library was being
decommissioned and many of the archived documents were going
missing. She served as the last Librarian for HHS. The
newsletters are stored at our home for safekeeping. Another complete
set of newsletters may have been lost in a building fire that totally
destroyed the Newsletter Classroom that Mrs. Fukubori managed over many
years. There is a chance that Joan Nishida-Sakaba, Editor of the
Viking, our classmate, may have another set.
I brought a few newsletters to the
Class Reunion meeting committee, chaired by Susan Motoyama-Miyagi; we
discussed sharing the newsletters. Concerns were damage, loss, beverage
spills, and cost or reproduction. It was decided that online
sharing using our class's website would be the best way. This
being the case, we needed to scan the newsletters into a digital format
for circulation.
Alan Inaba was contacted and asked
to scan the copies into his engineering company's large format Xerox
print/scan copier. He agreed; however, he was concerned about
feeding the document into the machine that could mutilate the original
copies. He took a couple of issues, the scanning worked and good
.pdf files were created for each month. Alan's brother
Gordon Inaba had additional issues and only two more months were needed
to complete the set.
Harlan Ohara, web maintainer for
the HHS website, was contacted by Carl. It was fun catching up
and "talk story" with Harlan, we have not seen or spoke for many
decades. Harlan quickly confirmed he can assist and agreed he
would post the HHS Class of 1968 Newsletters on the day of our 55th
Reunion day, October 21, 2023."
I'd (Harlan) like to mention that
HHS1968 was originally started by Carl Okuyama as well, he was able to
get some help from UH Hilo to get it started on their servers.
Subsequently, our brilliant classmate Ava Kita-Kadohiro took over and
did a bang-up job of improving it. She was instrumental in creating all
the nicely formatted web pages in the links off the main page that you
see and this was in the days where you actually had to write HTML code
to do it! I (Harlan) took over maintaining the website some time ago
after moving it to a web hosting service that I contracted.
